The Virgin Queen

Description

My version of Queen Elizabeth I of England, daughter of Henry VIII and the ill fated Anne Boleyn. Strong, cunning and powerful, she leads England into a golden age of prosperity through religious reforms, exploration and a powerful naval force. Here I portrayed her in front of the Tower of London, the place her mother spent the night before her coronation and later the night before her beheading. Elizabeth also spent time here a prisoner under her half sister, Mary.

The irony is that we see we have seen a host of "real" actors play Elizabeth on the screen over the last decade or more, and I think this is one of the most realistic and human depictions I have seen of her. Films either portray her as a stern ice queen or, when she it without her royal armor of makeup and dress, those are the times that the audience is almost always shown her "weak and vulnerable side." Here, she looks like a woman who happens to be a queen.
